On Sept. 20-22, 2013, we’ll host a Design-Build Adventure in Heavy Metal at the Design Build Adventure studio in Hornsby Bend, just nine miles east of Austin on FM 969. Five acres of Central Texas prairie land — marked by sprawling pecan trees, a campfire pit, main house and tool shop — will serve as the setting for all activities. This adventure promises to be a weekend of creative exploration and engaging conversation among people who enjoy learning, getting their hands dirty and just having a good time.

The Design Build Adventure fabrication department has been busy during May and June. Philip Burkhardt had led the adventure with James Rosinbaum, Dan Dyer, and Taylor Tehan on New York Avenue custom kitchen furniture, Tarrytown fence and gate, Clarksville bike shed and steel and cedar trellis for Mark Word Design.

James Rosinbaum worked with Coleman Coker’s University of Texas School of Architecture students on the steel portion of their summer design / build project.

Crazy April!  We spent a lot of time working on our new headquarters (“Camp”) – more specifically the back porch that has already been used for morning stretches, multiple happy hours, hammock time, multiple guitar pulls, and a dinner for 16  prepared by one of Austin’s finest Rene Ortiz.  The back porch also proved to be a good place to design and critique the “Virtual Fire” sculpture that was designed by Jack and Spence Kellum for the Waller Creel Pop-Up Adventure Picnic.  Next was the first Austin “Camp Design … Keep Reading→

April 21, 2013: Day 3 — the final day — of the Design Build Adventure in Heavy Metal, benefitting HAAM, began nice and easy with stretching on the back porch, breakfast tacos and coffee. Adventurers then quickly got to work, putting the finishing touches on their heavy metal masterpieces. April 20, 2013: Day 2 of the Design Build Adventure in Heavy Metal, benefitting HAAM, kicked off with Stretching with Jack on the back porch. Adventurers then participated in a design discussion over a breakfast of migas and coffee before heading out to the shop to start bringing their ideas to life.
