Design Build Adventure

This past weekend, the Texas Playboys Baseball Club gathered at the new Design Build Adventure headquarters (affectionately known as “The Long Time”) to test the batting cage, break in the front porch “music stage” and partake in a ridiculously delicious potluck picnic. (You haven’t lived until you’ve tried one of Lucy‘s Scotch eggs.) We’re happy to report that The Long Time, situated on five acres, served as the perfect setting for such a gathering.

Calling all music enthusiasts and creative types. On April 19-21, we’re hosting A Design-Build Adventure in Heavy Metal. During this 2.5-day workshop, you will get the chance to flex your creative muscle, learn a little about design, work with power tools and create something entirely unique out of steel. The adventure will culminate with a special, invitation-only party and silent auction that showcases the heavy metal masterpiece created during the workshop. A little late… but here are some photos of the Jack’s UT students “geodesic” projects in Marfa during El Cosmico.  The first half of the semester they dove into Bucky Fuller’s “Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth”, and “Education Automation” – culminating in a drive to Marfa for the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love where they erected their “geodesic” structures from recycled and reclaimed materials (try wine works, paper, cardboard, and yes, venetian blinds from the Habitat ReStore.)  The second half of the semester has been focused on designing a … Keep Reading→

Jack Sanders and Butch Anthony were in Portland again this August, as “Visiting Artists” at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft joint program –  MFA in Applied Craft.  Program Director JP Reuer and 17 extremely talented artists worked directly with Butch and Jack, and several local non-profits to design and build a “community bicycle hub” in just 15 days.  The “hub” will be a place for volunteers to teach people basic bicycle repair and other bicycle related programming.   The design and … Keep Reading→

Tomorrow Jack is lucky to head to Portland, Oregon again and work with the talented bunch of students at the PNCA OCAC (MFA Applied Craft and Design). The MFA students, neighborhood residents, with Jack and Butch Anthony will build a small bike repair shop / community hub in a bike skills park in N. Portland.

A few weeks ago – we held the 2nd Summer Camp Design Build Adventure in Marfa.  We continued our collaboration with the Dersu Collective and made improvements to the East Side Play!  12 great “campers” , and interdisciplinary All-Star team of talent and enthusiasm – we wandered, gathered, ‘stretched with Jack’, ate (#farmhousedelivery thank you), drank (#dosequis thank you ), designed, presented, laughed, Venus-gazed, dug holes, poured concrete, drilled, and welded.   We did maintenance to the last year’s shade structure by sewing up tears in the alumi-net, adding some more … Keep Reading→

Camp Design Build Adventure’s Winter Furniture Workshop was Dec 15-22 in Marfa, Texas. Hosted by our friends at El Cosmico, this workshop’s exercise was called “Cowboy Junkyard Chairs” and I was blown away by the amazing work of our participants – not to mention the support we got from our partners (Austin Farmhouse Delivery and West Texas Food Bank) and our friends in Marfa (Nick Terry, Peter Stanley, Sam Schonzeit, Molly Walker, Ross Cashiola, more).

It’s been moving so fast – hard to believe it has been almost 2 month since I had the
amazing opportunity to work with my buddy Butch Anthony again, this time in Portland , Oregon.
We worked with the students from the OCAC + PNCA MFA in Applied Craft and Design, and in only 10 days
and very little budget (maybe $1000.00) , converted an unused “unit” at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Justice Center into a “literacy center” …

What an awesome couple of days – especially the weather!  Yesterday the Masters Art students from OCAC + PNCA presented our “literacy center” design concepts to the Administration and the Students at the Long Juvenile Justice Center in Portland.

Today we are refining our ideas based on their feedback and hope to start building, fabricating, and painting as early as tomorrow.
