This Friday, December 3, 2010 – the 17 students that I have had the pleasure
of working with this Fall in an undergraduate studio at UT Austin (SoA) will present
Art / Shelter 17
A Design Build Adventure
presented by the Zidell House in Taylor, Texas.
Art / Shelter 17 is the presentation of each of the students
final projects / and a second or third iteration of the work we started at El Cosmico.
On Friday starting at 5PM, each student is responsible for presenting to the residents of Taylor
and a group of local high school art students a full scale temporary art installation /
that will double also as the students shelter for the night.
Brent Humphrey’s Zidell House is the host, and a number of local businesses have also
chipped in to provide beverages, a little food, and supplies for our friend John Hart Asher to cook a “whole hog” /
The student’s projects have a very limited budget, limited material palette, limited footprint,
and for approx. 24 hours their constructions must “do what art does” , and “do what shelter does” too / I hope the weather is nice!
This semester, they have had several opportunities to produce “big work” / including
the Tower 1, Marfa Art / Shelter 1, Tower 2, and now Art / Shelter 17 in Taylor.
