For the first 3 weeks of September ,
the Design Build Adventure crew worked to
design, pre-fabricate, haul, and erect the new stage for the
El Cosmico Trans Pecos Festival of Music and Love –
On Sunday we did the same thing in reverse ,
take down , load, haul , and rest! The new stage will
be put back up in March in the San Jose parking lot for SXSJ –
This could not be possible without our team – Quentin Hughes (at Hotel San Jose),
Jonathan Davidson (Jon Doe) and Gray Garmon in the shop and the field, nor without
structural design assistance from Lester Germanio (P.E.) , and Joyce Chen
who was in charge of the drawings …
The system really tested Design Build Adventure in new ways –
forced to make the stage light enough for two people to carry in pieces, short enough
to fit on a trailer (or two) , strong enough for Marfa winds, and sexy enough for
Liz Lambert .
The real hero is the 800lb capacity brake winches that mount temporarily to the columns
and lift the trusses into place –
2″ recycled oil pipe columns, screw jack feet, 1.5 inch top and bottom chord trusses w/
3/4″ bar, bolted connections, 20′ cedar 2×6 joists , and a canvas roof, backdrop, and skirt
